How Joseph Sleiman became a Registered Liquidator

Joseph Sleiman CA FCPA, an Insolvency Australia member, had an interesting path to getting into insolvency. “My good mate’s father closed his business and gave me his black leather boardroom chairs, which I sold by advertising in the local papers. He commented that I liquidated his chairs for a nice profit, and it was that process that started my interest in liquidations,” Joseph explains.
Fast forward to today and Joseph is a Registered Liquidator, having commenced practising in his own firm in 2002 – Sleiman & Co in Sydney City and now on Sydney’s lower north shore – working with a range of businesses and advisers across Sydney, providing a cost-effective price and dedicated hands-on support. Areas of specialty include developers, building and construction, contractors and smaller “mums and dads” businesses.
One of Joseph’s career highlights involved saving the Bondi Diggers Club in 1991, via sale and lease back, in order to restructure the club’s business with the overseeing support of the Provisional Liquidator. It was a great success, he says, and members continued to enjoy low cost beers 🍻
Joseph believes one of the big misconceptions by some irate creditors is that insolvency practitioners are the “cause of the insolvency”. “In fact, we try to save the business if we can, and I’ve seen some good practitioners taking on personal liability to help keep the insolvent entity from total failure in order to save the business. There can certainly be a creditor ‘expectation gap’ of some sort,” he says.
Sleiman & Co offers a free one-hour consultation to help with clients’ concerns and issues. “If we are appointed, we try hard to keep it simple and stress free,” Joseph says. And he has simple advice: “Seek help from professionals to identify and air your concerns and issues, which you should always be on alert for while you’re in business. And then take appropriate action.”
Joseph has a Business Degree with a double major in Accounting & Finance and has done a post-graduate IPAA (Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia) course.
